28th June 1999

You may have heard that a Special Edition of Austin Powers 1 is in the works at Roadshow, but did you know that tmay are also working on a on a DVD release of Quinten Tarantino Scripted TRUE ROMANCE...no set date for this one

PS The Warner Distributed Buena Vista DVD Flipper Release of The Rock is a simply STUNNING piccy that is marred only by the fact it's a flipper.....with only a few spots of Audio syncing problems that really weren't that troublesome....and even Christ himself doesn't know why it got an R18+ Rating.......uncut, not uncut.....only barely an MA rated film IMHO.........

Crap amount of News @ DVDown Under!!!!!
Yes......even I can say the amount of news posted here has been pretty lame over the past few weeks....okay...there's a few good bits here and there, but not enough...i agree.....Saville (the place I live..oh no wait i mean work for :-) are on the move to the big smoke and seeing i am part of their Info Services dept.....we have a shit load of work to do in order to get the 200 people up and running on this Monday(loooooooooong work weekend for us)....so I am sad to say that work is getting in the way of my play time.... anyways.... enough of my sad story (the rights are still up for grabs by the way :-)...so i expect we'll be back in full swing after the millenium (well at least it will seem that long)

Seemless Layer Changes???

Have you always thought it impossible for the Layer Change on an RSDL (Dual Layered) DVD to be totally seemless (on a standard DVD player)...well it seems it is
....When i recently watched Roadshow's DVD of BLADE I noticed that on the Denon DVD2000 the layer change from chapter 17 to chapter 18 was totally undetectable...and it seems that the same applies to the Pioneer DV505...On my every faithful samsung DVD905 :-) the layer change is as quick as it has always been, same goes for the Grundig (whatever the model)....and when Mike D recently reveiwed BLADE he was of the impression that the disc was only Dual Layered with the entire movie contained on ONE layer (and not spread over 2), but having Confirmed this with the techical DVD speciaist at Roadshow it is most definiteiy spead over TWO layers of the disc....

Blade isn't the only disc that i have come across which has a seemless layer change.....Roadshow's Long Kiss Goodnight layer change on the Samsung DVD905 and 907 is seemless, granted it occurs at a fade to black, but there is absolutely no image pausing AND the audio can be continually heard  at the is point (unlike with other DVDs where both the audio and vision clearly pause during the layer change)....However, with LKGN, there is a pause on the sammy at the chapter before,   which i initally thought to be the layer change (but every other player pauses at the right point, and incidentally the layer change pauses on the Denon for this DVD)....
I was talking..well emailing....with Craig M over at the DVD Bits about this (as he has the panasonic 350A which the denon is based on) and he came up with a rather beleiveable answer that seeing as a DVD can be read upto 9 megabits constanty, if the data rate is low enough before and after the change then you should be able to buffer that info and not get a pause (much like on a CD Walkman)
Anyway, something to chew over...sure it's a bit inconsistent with different discs on different players etc, but it's obviously possible to reduce or eliminate layer change times........AND isn't it ironic that this occurs on DVDs from the company people have complained about most in Australia...hmmm veeeery interestink

I'd be very curious to know (as would quite a few others) if you Notice a Layer Change or not on your DVD player with Roadshow's BLADE (for starters), so if you're interested in getting some stats on this please EMAIL DVDown Under

PS Jackie Brown DVD was released yesterday and DVD Bits has the goss on it, Roadshow's next DVD will be Rounders, then hopefully Lost In Space

oh before i forget..a big thanks to Video Pro Carindale for loaning me the Denon DVD player (very nice player, and talk about bloody fast access times...wow!!!)

Lost in Space is intended as roadshow's next release and this time the Dolby Digital Trailer will be CANYON (my personal fave)..
followed by the uncut version of  54

PPS Niall Young over the other side of our continent has a petition to get Babylon5 released in the 16:9 format..me being the slack bastard that I am at times neglected to post this important info the other week, luckily some of the other region 4 sites around the place are on the ball.......sorry Niall :-)

First Day of Winter 1999

Buena Vista's Region 4 Armageddon DVD
Many of you (if not all) will be pleased to know that the version of Armageddon that we will see in OZ will in fact be an anamorphic RSDL release......Unlike the version released in the United Kingdom not so long ago, which was NOT anamorphic and was a dreaded flipper, ours is NOT from the same release, but rather the European version....Apparently with This film being so big for BV they decided to make 2 versions for PAL countries....so a big thanks goes to Warner Australia for getting us the better of the two...(i'm still a bit disappointed about the other flippers coming from BV though :-(
