Seemless Layer Changes???
Have you always thought it impossible for the Layer Change on an RSDL (Dual
Layered) DVD to be totally seemless (on a standard DVD player)...well it seems it is....When i recently watched Roadshow's DVD of BLADE I noticed that on
the Denon DVD2000 the layer change from chapter 17 to chapter 18 was totally
undetectable...and it seems that the same
applies to the Pioneer DV505...On my every faithful samsung DVD905 :-)
the layer change is as quick as it has always been, same goes for the Grundig (whatever
the model)....and when Mike D recently reveiwed BLADE he was of the impression that the
disc was only Dual Layered with the entire movie contained on ONE layer (and not spread
over 2), but having Confirmed this with the techical DVD speciaist at Roadshow it is
most definiteiy spead over TWO layers of the disc....
Blade isn't the only disc that i have come across which has a seemless layer
change.....Roadshow's Long Kiss Goodnight layer change on the Samsung
DVD905 and 907 is seemless, granted it occurs at a fade to black, but there is absolutely
no image pausing AND the audio can be continually heard at the is point (unlike with
other DVDs where both the audio and vision clearly pause during the layer
change)....However, with LKGN, there is a pause on the sammy at the chapter before,
which i initally thought to be the layer change (but every other player pauses at the
right point, and incidentally the layer change pauses on the Denon for this DVD)....
I was talking..well emailing....with Craig M over at the DVD Bits about this
(as he has the panasonic 350A which the denon is based on) and he came up with a rather
beleiveable answer that seeing as a DVD can be read upto 9 megabits constanty, if the data
rate is low enough before and after the change then you should be able to buffer that info
and not get a pause (much like on a CD Walkman)
Anyway, something to chew over...sure it's a bit inconsistent with different discs on
different players etc, but it's obviously possible to reduce or eliminate layer change
times........AND isn't it ironic that this occurs on DVDs from the company people have
complained about most in Australia...hmmm veeeery interestink
I'd be very curious to know (as would quite a few others)
if you Notice a Layer Change or not on your DVD player with Roadshow's BLADE
(for starters), so if you're interested in getting some stats on this please EMAIL DVDown Under
PS Jackie Brown DVD was released yesterday and DVD Bits has the goss on it,
Roadshow's next DVD will be Rounders, then hopefully Lost In Space
